Profile of
International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC)

Objective
The mission of the International Institute for Energy Conservation's (IIEC), a non-profit organization with headquarters in United States of America, is to accelerate global adoption of energy efficiency policies, technologies, and practices to enable economic and environmentally sustainable development.

Activities
IIEC works through its affiliates in London, its regional offices in Bangkok and Johannesburg, as well as its project offices in India, China, and the Philippines to conduct impartial evaluations of building, transport, and environmental technologies while working simultaneously with multilateral institutions, governments, academic and research organizations, industry, and non-governmental organizations.  IIEC works to help the design and construction industry develop innovative products and processes. It builds on current knowledge and research, develops relationships with key players in target countries, and helps to catalyze, design, and implement sustainable energy projects.

Sample Project

Copper Energy Efficiency Program (CEEP)

CEEP is a three-year project to improve the efficiency of energy use in India and China by increasing the market availability and affordability of energy-efficient, copper-intensive technologies. In order to implement this initiative, IIEC has opened project offices in Beijing, China, and Mumbai, India. CEEP has four interrelated objectives:

  • transfer technology and foster indigenous production of at least one copper-intensive, energy-efficient product in India and China;

  • increase the use of this product through training of project developers, financial institutions, and end-users;

  • foster demand by establishing low-interest financing mechanisms and promoting use; and

  • disseminate the lessons learned from the work in India and China to other developing countries in Asia, Latin America, Africa, and Central and Eastern Europe.

The project includes the following components:

  • Market evaluation (technology and market dynamics) to determine the cost-effectiveness, opportunities, and barriers for energy-efficient motors, transformers, and low-loss magnetic ballasts. This assessment will be used to identify the technologies that are appropriate for transfer and further market development to the target country. One technology will be selected for each target country.

  • Fostering business partnerships, including a database of companies in-country interested in manufacturing or distributing the selected energy efficient technology and companies ex-country with energy efficient technology interested in partnerships in-country.

  • Financing, including technical support fin the development of business plans for financing and working with financial institutions to establish finance mechanisms that support energy efficiency investments by manufacturers and end-users.

  • Market support to increase demand for the energy efficient technology. This will include information dissemination, training and product promotion targeted at the “decision makers,” including financial officers and senior management at companies, engineering staff, and project developers.

  • Information dissemination and final workshops to disseminate the results of the project to other developing countries through regional workshops.
