Profile of
The Nautilus Institute for
Security and Sustainable Development

Objectives
The Nautilus Institute for Security and Sustainable Development is a policy-oriented research and consulting organization. Nautilus promotes international cooperation for security and ecologically sustainable development. Programs encompass both global and regional issues, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region.

Activities

  • The Globalization and Governance Program promotes the integration of environmental objectives into national economic policies and international economic institutions.

  • The Global Peace and Security Program identifies ways to avoid and resolve conflicts without resort to force, with particular emphasis on Northeast Asia.

  • The Energy, Security and Environment Program studies the intersection of energy, environment, and international security issues in Northeast Asia, particularly Japan. Activities include research, publications, and conferences aimed at developing sustainable policy alternatives.

  • The Pegasus Project provides teenagers in the San Francisco Bay area with opportunities to acquire sailing and scientific-technical skills, learn teamwork, and become environmentally sensitive. The project is organized around the Institute's 45-foot research vessel, the Pegasus.

Eighteen energy experts from China, Japan, The Republic of Korea, The Democratic People's Republic, and the Russina Federation completed a trip on Pegasus in stormy weather on March 1, 2001. The experts were hosted by the Pegasus on two separate voyages!

Sample Project
Democratic People's Republic of Korea Village Wind Power Pilot Project Project is the first attempt by a United States non-governmental organization to work side-by-side with Democratic People's Republic of Korea  in cooperative energy development. The project installed seven wind turbine towers in a rural village on the west coast of the country. The wind energy provides clean, renewable energy to the village's medical clinic, kindergarten, and households. The project is seen as a stepping stone from which the country can enter the international development community.
