Profile of Pelangi - Indonesia

Objectives
The goals of Pelangi (literally "Rainbow") are high quality research products and policy recommendations for sustainable development.

Activities

  • Member and expert technical advisor of the Interdepartmental National Committee on Climate Change;

  • Member and expert technical advisor of the National Delegation to Intergovernmental Climate Negotiations;

  • Coordinating NGOs from Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines to campaign in the United States of America to educate its politicians, media, and the public on developing country issues related to climate change;

  • Preparing 12 country papers on developing country voluntary actions that lead to reduction of their greenhouse gas emissions, while at the same time advancing their sustainable development;

  • Hosts a roundtable on climate change and clean development mechanism that involves government institutions, non-governmental organizations, members of the private sector, and the financial sector;

  • Member of Steering Committee to identify and prepare Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in Indonesia;

  • Collaborate with Brazil, South Africa, and Bangladesh to test CDM eligibility criteria and sustainable development indicators in pilot projects; and

  • Influence energy sector development in Indonesia, especially the restructuring and privatization of the sector and the role of CDM.

Programs

  • Reform and Sustainability

    This program aims to guard and guide the process of political and economic reforms in Indonesia so that they adhere to principles of environmental human rights and sustainable development. Included in this program are two projects: a) Sustainable Development Indicators and b) Decentralization and Redistribution of Access to Natural Resources.

  • Energy and Material Flows

    This program aims to look into the possibility of closing material loops from cradle to grave in the production and consumption chains in Indonesia. It includes more efficient use of energy and the utilization of renewable sources. Projects included in this program are: a) Renewable Energy and Efficiency; b) Pollution Prevention; c) Clean Production; and d) Waste Management.

  • Center for Sustainable Transportation and Urban Environment

    This program aims to establish demand-side management in the transportation sector. The center also provides a node for a network of NGOs and research institutions working on transportation and urban environmental issues.

  • Climate Change

    The Climate Change Program facilitates public awareness efforts in Indonesia and other developing countries on: a) overall issues of climate change; and b) public awareness efforts in industrialized countries regarding developing country concerns related to climate change. The program aims at bridging the industrialized and the developing country interests regarding climate change. Projects included in this program are: a) South-North Collaboration in CDM; b) CDM in the Forestry Sector; c) Climate Change/Southeast Asia Project; and d) the Asian Leadership Initiative which aims to advance the leadership of developing countries in the international politics of climate change.
